Need help choosing the right size scales? Click HERE Most digital readout displays can be set to display scale movement in either "radius" or "diameter" mode. The factory default is to show scale movement in "radius" mode, which means the movement shown on the display and the actual scale movement is a direct 1:1 correlation. In other words, for .001" of actual movement of the scale, the display shows a corresponding change of .001" on the display. The minimum increment the scale is capable of registering, or reporting, is referred to as the scale resolution. Current industry standard for scales is 5 microns or .0002" resolution. Historically, 1 micron scales have been extremely expensive (that is, until now - at DRO PROS, 1 Micron scales are only $50 more per axis).
The minimum movement a 5 micron scale is capable of detecting is 0.0002". The minimum movement a 1 micron scale is capable of detecting is 0.00005". DRO PROS kits include 5 micron scales as standard, but most all kits can be upgraded to 1 micron scales for only $50 more per axis. DRO PROS brand displays are capable of utilizing either the 5 or 1 micron scales, and in fact are capable of "mixing" 5 and 1 micron scales on the same display. The Easson series ES10 displays are not compatible with 1 micron scales.
"Radius mode" vs. "Diameter mode" You'll recall that at it's finest resolution, the smallest movement a 5 micron scale can detect is .0002". That means, when working on a lathe, moving the cross slide into the workpiece .0002" would actually remove .0004" of material. That's because in lathe work, material is removed from both sides of the workpiece at the same time. So plunging a lathe tool bit or cutter .0002" into the workpiece reduces the overall material by .0004". Because of this 2:1 ratio of material removed vs. cross slide movement, most lathe operators change, or program, the cross slide scale to read in "diameter" mode. In diameter mode, the operator now reads the material being removed from the part, not the actual cross slide movement.
It's important to note that whether you choose to display the cross slide movement in either "radius" or "diameter" mode is immaterial. Either way, with a .0002" movement on the cross slide, you still remove .0004" of material. That's just the nature, or characteristic, of how lathes work.
The dilemma begins to unfold when machining a part on the cross slide. When working with a 5 micron scale, the minimum movement it's capable of detecting is .0002". But when the display is programmed to read in "diameter" mode, all of a sudden the display starts counting in .0004" increments (.0004, .0008, .0012 and so on). Many operators are surprised when their .0002" resolution cross slide scales now only read .0002". Note this 'phenomena' is not unique to any one brand of readouts. This is true for ALL digital readouts. So is there any way around this dilemma? Well, yes and no. No, because cutting on a lathe effectively halves the resolution. Remember, it doesn't matter whether the scale is programmed to display in either radius or diameter mode - a .0002" movement will remove .0004" of material regardless of which mode (radius or diameter) the display is programmed to read. The only real solution is to start with a higher resolution scale to begin with. That's where the DRO PROS 1 micron SlimLine cross slide scales really show their value! A 1 micron scale on the cross slide effectively reads in .0001" resolution increments! So yes, a DRO PROS 1 micron scale will read 4 times better resolution than an industry standard 5 micron scale!
Did you order 1 micron scales? Make sure to 'initialize' them to the readout:
So what does DRO PROS recommend? We recommend 5 micron scales for the carriage, and 1 micron SlimLine scales for the cross slide. In this configuration, effective resolution is .0002" on the carriage and .0001" on the cross slide. For just a $50 upgrade, you get 4 times the resolution - definitely worth the upgrade in our opinion!

High Noise Immunity & (EMC) Design A triple stage noise filter is used in the 2L for transducer signals input noise filtering which offer very wide frequency bandwidth (1 KHz-1000MHz) noise attenuation. Extreme care was taken in PCB and component layout to achieve the highest possible noise immunity and EMC performance.
Adaptable to Poor Electrical Sources A low power consumption approach was used in the system design of the 2L. The 2L can handle a wide range of supply voltages (160v~260v/80v~130v). The 2L's linear power supply offers excellent noise immunity and proven highest reliability without serious heat generation. Use of a combined capacitor-varistor noise filter in the power supply system ensures the highest possible noise and surge immunity to poor electrical sources.
High Durability Switch Membrane An Autotex series polyester film from UK'S Autotype Ltd. is used as the key membrane of the 2L. Autotex polyester film is known as the highest quality, highest specification membrane film available in the membrane switch manufacturing industry. Autotex film offers excellent switch life and chemical resistance to the most commonly used industry solvents. Switch life expectancy is rated at a minimum of 100,000 cycles.
Robust Casing, Chromium Plated Panel The front plate is made from 1.5mm thick electroplated steel. The high strength 3.5mm metal casing provides a high quality, robust housing.
Ultra Low Temperature Rise Transformer Reducing heat generation is critical to longevity. An ultra low temperature rise high permeability iron core transformer is utilized, which significantly reduces core temperature rise to about 5 degrees Celsius.
State of the Art Electronics Technology A custom 3 axes counting ASIC designed with CMOS technology greatly reduces the number of component counts, which lowers the system power consumption and yields greater reliability.
Advanced Production Technology An SMT assembly process is used in manufacturing the 2L. All components are soldered by computerized control soldering machines to achieve the highest quality soldering possible.
Totally Sealed Enclosure The enclosure of the 2L is completely sealed to protect the electronic circuitry against the hazards of a typical shop environment, such as dust, evaporated coolant, fumes, etc. To avoid overheating of the PCB caused by the totally sealed enclosure, a metal front plate and panel is utilized to quickly dissipate generated heat.
Non Linear Error Compensation In an application where a very high degree of accuracy is required, such as grinding machines, boring machines, etc. it is very costly and also very difficult to achieve the required micron grade accuracy. The 2L offers a very cost effective way to improve the display accuracy by utilizing non-linear error compensation. The non-linear error compensation function of the 2L is very similar to the non-linear error compensation that is commonly found in CNC machine controllers.

Why does DRO PROS post their digital readout part prices online when other companies don't? That's because if you were to find out what other companies are going to charge you for parts when you need them, you might not buy their digital readout kit in the first place! At DRO PROS, we're proud to show off our low part prices. Go DRO PROS!
Why should you buy from DRO PROS? We speak English - We answer our phones - Same day shipping Veteran owned, Veteran managed - and proud of it!
Our goal is to make customers for life. We feel that, in the long run, treating customers right will yield much more than simply "going for the sale". In accordance with that, we have attempted to pass on some ideas to help you, the customer, in completing your purchase decision:
Price. Probably the most talked about factor when buying a digital readout. Price can also be the most misleading, and perhaps worst way, to judge a digital readout kit. We've all heard the old adage, "You get what you pay for." Before the internet, it was true, price did generally correlate directly to value. But that was yesterdays economy. All resellers obtained their goods the same way, and therefore incurred the same costs. In today's economy, the market has changed drastically. At DRO PROS, we import and sell directly to you. Unlike our competitors, we do not have Western and Eastern sales divisions and multi layers of management to support. One location, one cost, and the savings get passed on to you!
Intuitiveness or "Ease of Use". Probably the most important, and hardest to determine factor when buying a readout. Think in terms of after the sale. Even if you get an absolute 'rock star' bottom line price that would make William Shatner proud, if the digital readout is not user friendly, you still didn't get a 'deal'. The whole point of getting a digital readout is to make your work easier and more enjoyable. If the digital readout is poorly designed, too complicated, if the display isn't bright enough, or in other words is 'user unfriendly', you'll regret your purchase decision every time you turn it on. It simply won't matter what you paid, it's not worth it!
Support. Most likely the second most important, and perhaps most overlooked factor when buying a digital readout. Imagine trying to reach a technician when you've bought a digital readout from an overseas reseller! Yet every day, people "save" $50 and buy products on eBay without stopping to think what will happen when they need service or tech support. Some digital readout resellers don't even publish a phone number! While our competitors continue to pare down or even totally eliminate their customer support, we continue to expand our Customer Service. Our Video Tutorials are the best in the industry, and are available free for you, our customers. Our tech help is the best in the business - our techs all know our readouts inside and out. Nobody knows digital readouts like DRO PROS!
Warranty. DRO PROS is proud to offer the industries safest, longest, 6 year warranty on all of our Electronica magnetic scale kits. All of our DRO PROS brand glass scale kits come with a full 3 year warranty, and our EASSON kits come standard with a 1 year warranty. DRO PROS brand warranty claims are handled directly by DRO PROS. No run-arounds, no hassle! Something not working as expected? Call us, don't get redirected overseas like the other guys!
Parts. Can you believe some resellers don't carry parts? That's right, buy from the "other guys", break a scale, and you get to replace the entire digital readout kit! Don't assume you can just go buy a different brand scale, either, because most manufacturers use different connectors on their scales. If that wasn't enough, even among those with a common connector, such as a DB9, most are hard wired differently. Finally, don't overlook the cost of parts. At DRO PROS, an 800mm replacement scale will cost you $197. A similar scale sold extensively by a European company will cost nearly $700! Finally, we have a massive inventory of parts, so rest easy - a replacement part is only a phone call away!
The Best Value. We literally search world-wide for the best value digital readout products on the planet. If there was a better digital readout package to be sold, we would be selling it. Yes, we've seen cheaper units on eBay, but there is a reason they're cheaper. Think poor quality, no parts, no manual, non-existent customer service, poor product fit/finish etc.
Customer Service. We pledge to never "over sell" you on a product that won't work well for you. Our philosophy is to try and save you money and get the best value kit tailored to the machinery you have. Many of our customers are surprised when we recommend against buying a more expensive brand. Again, our philosophy is to build customers for life. Give us a call and let us save you money!
Shipping. Most orders ship the same day, the next at the latest. We do not 'drop' ship, we have our own massive warehouse of inventory right here on site. We use FedEx, you'll get a tracking number emailed to you immediately, and we cover all shipping insurance automatically.
The Company. DRO PROS is a veteran owned, American company. We enjoy selling quality products at competitive prices. We believe that providing the best customer service is the key to success. No other company spends more time on the phone with customers than we do. Even in a down economy, our company continues to thrive and grow. We look forward to earning your business!
The Bottom Line. Our line of digital readout's are simply the most user friendly readouts on the planet. Because of our direct marketing structure, they're also extremely affordable. Coupled with our extensive customer service and affordable parts, our Digital Readout products are simply the best value on the planet.
